A special anti-drug operation in the Tamale metropolis has led to the arrest of 10 suspected drug peddlers, according to the Northern Regional Police Command.
The exercise, carried out on 13 March 2026, formed part of intensified police efforts to disrupt the sale and movement of illegal drugs in parts of the city identified as high-risk areas.
Police said the operation was conducted by the Regional Special Operations Team, made up of 33 officers, who moved through a number of suburbs including Gurugu, Gumani, Kanvilli and Gbela.
At a media briefing in Tamale, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Alhassan Luckman Niendow, said the suspects were picked up during routine surveillance and enforcement action targeting drug activity.
He named them as Hamed Salim, 22; Imoro Rafiu, 20; Hamed Abdul Hakim, 27; Mohammed Kamaldeen, 28; Jamila Abdullah, 20; Kwame Joseph, 32; Kawara Francis, 50; Apeuri Kawara, 40; Abubakari, 56; and Adam Abdul Razak, 32.
According to the police, some of those arrested were found with substances suspected to be Indian hemp, while others were allegedly carrying quantities of tramadol believed to have been meant for sale.
Officers also impounded three motorbikes, which investigators suspect may have been used in drug peddling operations within the metropolis.
Police said all 10 suspects, together with the seized items, remain in custody while investigations continue.
ASP Niendow said the command would sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing the sale and distribution of illicit drugs and preserving law and order in the region.
