On 24 February 2025, authorities intercepted a truck carrying 1,115 gallons of cocoa beans at the Ave-Havi border post, stopping what appeared to be a smuggling attempt destined for Togo.
Officers from the Ghana Immigration Service, operating out of the Akanu Sector Command and supported by the Ghana Revenue Authority-Customs Division, acted on credible intelligence to halt the vehicle.
The truck registered as AS 2103-W and driven by Ibrahim Fatawu, was stopped based on information indicating its illicit cargo. Following the interception, the cocoa beans were promptly transferred to officials at COCOBOD for further action. Meanwhile, the truck has been impounded and the driver is currently under investigation.
Michael Amoako-Atta, the Assistant Commissioner of Immigration in charge of Public Relations, issued a statement warning potential smugglers about the economic damage and revenue losses their activities cause. He also praised the local border communities for their vigilance and cooperation in protecting Ghana’s borders.
