A joint operation involving the Ghana Gold Board (GGB), the Goldbod Taskforce, and National Security operatives has led to the arrest of 25 individuals—a mix of Ghanaians and foreign nationals—suspected of illegal gold trading, smelting, and assaying in Accra.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., confirmed the arrests on Monday, saying the suspects were picked up during two intelligence-led raids at Dome Pillar 2 and Akweteyman–Achimota.
Authorities confiscated over GH¢64,000 and US$112,500 in cash, alongside several gold bars and other items believed to be linked to illicit mining activities.
Mr. Nunekpeku said all suspects have been placed on police inquiry bail, with some already arraigned before court while others remain under active investigation.
Reiterating the government’s resolve to sanitise Ghana’s gold sector, the Deputy CEO warned that individuals and companies operating without valid licences would face severe consequences.
The Ghana Gold Board, he noted, is working closely with security agencies to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across the country.
The collaborative effort, he added, aims to protect Ghana’s mineral wealth, promote transparency, and ensure compliance with existing mining and trade regulations.
