The Eastern Regional Police Command has arraigned 34 people, including six traditional leaders, after violent clashes during a ritual ceremony at Ahwerase left one person dead and three others injured.

In a statement signed by Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh on Thursday, October 23, the Command confirmed that the suspects have been charged with rioting with offensive weapons and causing unlawful harm.

The incident occurred during a traditional rite to lift the ban on noise-making ahead of the Odwira Festival. It reportedly escalated into a confrontation that turned deadly.

The deceased, identified as Isaac Nana Kwasi, has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Aburi KOM Presbyterian Hospital.

Police retrieved a Umarex pistol (No. MP160407589), a Cyborg Magnum Force pump-action shotgun (No. 602-H25YT-516), along with four live and four spent cartridges from the scene.

Authorities say peace has been restored and security has been reinforced in the community.

“The police will like to assure the general public that before, during and after the festival, everything will be done to ensure that people go about their activities in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity,” the statement said.
