Thirty-six people have been remanded into police custody after a major anti-drug operation in Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, aged between 17 and 37, were put before the Nsuta Circuit Court on Monday following their arrest during police raids at Akyeremade and Tunsuom.
The court, presided over by Simon Nketsia Gaagah, remanded them after prosecutors said investigations were still ongoing.
Their pleas were not taken.
Police prosecutor Peter Kantoreje told the court that officers from the Asante Mampong Police Command carried out simultaneous swoops on May 23.
The operation, he said, formed part of efforts to tackle substance abuse and the sale of illegal drugs within the municipality.
According to the prosecution, some of the suspects at Akyeremade attempted to run away when they saw police officers.
They allegedly dropped substances suspected to be Indian hemp before fleeing.
“At both locations, suspects attempted to escape upon seeing the police, but they were pursued and arrested,” the prosecutor said.
The court also heard that another group was arrested at a drug ghetto in Tunsuom, where they were allegedly found smoking marijuana.
Police said several items were retrieved during the operation.
They included scissors, cigarette and marijuana lighters, wrappers suspected to be used for packaging drugs, cross-body bags and GH¢5,679 in cash.
The case has been adjourned to June 2, 2026.
