The Wenchi Traditional Council in the Bono Region has apprehended five individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining, including a Chinese national, within the Wenchi Municipality.

A task force established by Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, President of the Council, carried out the operation at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The arrests took place at an illegal mining site in Atuna, a farming community in the area.

The task force confiscated four excavators, two washing machines, and private Ford vehicles during the operation. The suspects, along with the seized equipment, were handed over to the Wenchi Divisional Police Command for further action.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wenchi, Mr. Reindorf Oware, Special Aide to Osagyefo Tabrako III, who is also the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area, confirmed the arrests.

He urged the police to expedite their investigations and bring the suspects to justice. "We also expect the authorities to ensure the suspects restore the land they have degraded through their illegal activities," he emphasized.
