The Accra Regional Police Command has begun investigations into a string of violent episodes that disrupted the parliamentary re-run election in Ablekuma North on Friday, July 11.
A statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, head of the Command’s Public Affairs Unit, confirmed that officers are actively reviewing video evidence that captured scenes of chaos and attacks at various polling stations. Statements are also being taken from eyewitnesses and complainants to support the inquiry.
Among the most serious incidents is the assault of a journalist by a uniformed police officer — an act caught on video and widely condemned. That officer has since been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges for the attack.
According to the police, initial investigations have uncovered useful leads, and arrests are anticipated in the coming days. Victims of the reported assaults have been provided with medical forms to seek treatment and assist further police action.
Friday’s re-run came after a court annulled the original parliamentary results due to irregularities. The fresh poll was expected to restore public trust but instead saw episodes of violence, including allegations of intimidation and police misconduct.
The Command has pledged to hold all offenders accountable and is calling on the public to assist with credible information. Citizens can reach the police via emergency lines 18555 or 191.
Authorities have promised a thorough, unbiased process to ensure justice is served.
