A Ghanaian man accused of orchestrating an $8m (£6.3m) online romance scam targeting elderly Americans has appeared before the Gbese District Court in Accra under tight security.

Frederick Kumi, 34, who is also known by the aliases Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng and Abu Trica, was brought to court on 23 December 2025 following his arrest in a joint operation involving Ghanaian authorities and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Kumi was detained on 11 December after what officials describe as a coordinated cross-border effort to dismantle an alleged criminal network that preyed on vulnerable older people in the United States.

US prosecutors say a federal grand jury in the Northern District of Ohio has indicted him on charges of wire fraud and money laundering. He is accused of running a series of deceptive online romance schemes from 2023, allegedly tricking victims into sending large sums of money on the basis of fabricated relationships and false promises.

The case has drawn significant public and media attention in both Ghana and the US, given the scale of the alleged fraud and the involvement of US federal authorities. Further court proceedings are expected as Ghanaian and American officials work through the legal processes surrounding the charges.
