The confrontation, which took place on Wednesday, October 23, involved factions aligned with the Abokomanhene of the Asona family and the Baamuhene.

The Ghana Police Service has stepped up security in Ahwerase and nearby communities in the Akuapem South Municipality after violent chieftaincy clashes erupted over rights to commence the annual Odwira Festival.

The confrontation, which took place on Wednesday, October 23, involved factions aligned with the Abokomanhene of the Asona family and the Baamuhene. The dispute centred on who holds authority to lift the traditional ban on drumming and noise-making, a key ritual that signals the beginning of the festival.

Police confirmed that one person, identified as Isaac Nana Kwasi, died during the violence. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the Aburi KOM Presbyterian Hospital.

Thirty-four individuals, including six chiefs, have been arrested and charged with rioting with offensive weapons and causing unlawful harm.

Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Regional Police Command, said officers remain resolute in their efforts to restore order.

“We are going to ensure that the law takes its course. The persons who have been arrested are being taken through due process,” he told JoyNews.

According to JoyNews correspondent Maxwell Kudekor, the suspects were arraigned before the Mampong District Court on Thursday. The court granted bail — GH₵500,000 with one surety each for four leaders, and GH₵100,000 with one surety each for the remaining 30 followers.

Police say calm has been restored, but personnel are still stationed in the area to prevent further clashes.
