An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, a painter accused of stealing high-value electrical cables from the Bank of Ghana’s Ridge construction site.
The accused, who faces charges of unlawful entry and theft of copper cables worth GH¢1,035,500, was granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties. The court, presided over by relief judge Mr. Isaac Addo, also directed the prosecution to comply with disclosure procedures ahead of trial.
The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agustin Kingsley Oppong, who led the prosecution, the incident was discovered on February 16, 2025. The complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer—noticed a break-in at the Energy Farm, a secured area on the construction site where copper cables had been stored.
A review of CCTV footage allegedly captured Lawal and two unidentified individuals stealing several lengths of 1c x 240 and 1c x 300 copper cables. The footage reportedly showed the suspects using a scaffold to access the restricted area, where they cut and removed the cables.
Lawal was later apprehended by the complainants and handed over to the police. Investigations revealed that the stolen cables were sold at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, with Lawal reportedly receiving GH¢2,000 as his share. He was, however, unable to assist police in locating his accomplices or the buyer believed to have received the stolen goods.
Lawal has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
