A 23-year-old security guard, Abraham Quaye, has been held in custody after prosecutors alleged he took cash meant for the purchase of ECG metres and later spent part of it on gadgets and other items.
The Amasaman Circuit Court has remanded Abraham Quaye, a 23-year-old security guard, over claims he stole GH¢200,000 from his employer.
Quaye denied the allegation when he appeared before Mrs Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong, sitting as a relieving judge.
Police say the complainant, Francis Yeboah, is both a District Manager at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the owner of Nzema Guest House at Ayawaso, where Quaye was employed. Prosecutors told the court the two men live in the same area.
According to the prosecution, on 19 November 2025, Mr Yeboah was given GH¢450,000 by the Ghana Police Administration to facilitate the purchase of ECG metres for a construction firm working at Kwabenya. He reportedly placed the money in a white polythene bag and left it in his car.
The next morning, at about 04:30, Mr Yeboah allegedly asked Quaye to wash the vehicle. Later, when Mr Yeboah went to make payment for the metres, he reportedly discovered that GH¢200,000 was missing.
Prosecutors said he contacted Quaye immediately, but Quaye denied any involvement.
Police told the court that Mr Yeboah later noticed what he believed were sudden changes in Quaye’s spending pattern, including purchases that did not appear to align with his earnings.
On 13 December 2025, Mr Yeboah filed a formal complaint at the Pokuase Police Station, leading to Quaye’s arrest, the prosecution said.
A search on Quaye allegedly uncovered GH¢164,000 in his bag, which police said was handed to the complainant.
Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, prosecuting, said Quaye later admitted during investigations to taking the money and using part of it to buy items including an iPhone 13, a charger, shisha, a power bank, sneakers, clothing and other goods valued at GH¢9,010.
Police also alleged he said he gave GH¢1,200 to his sister, and GH¢200 each to his stepmother, mother and father, with the remaining funds used for food and other personal expenses.
Quaye has since been formally charged and placed before the court, which has ordered him held in custody as the case continues.
