A 20-year-old scrap dealer, Tahiru Issah, has been sentenced to 12 months of hard labor by the Ashaiman Circuit Court after pleading guilty to theft. His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun delivered the ruling on March 5, 2025.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey, Tahiru, a Nigerien national residing in Fitter Line, Ashaiman, was caught during a police night patrol on February 26, 2025. Officers from the Gbetsile District Police became suspicious upon seeing him carrying a black polythene bag with heavy items.

Upon searching the bag, authorities found six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve worth GHS3,250.00, all identified as property of Ghana Water Limited (GWL). Tahiru admitted to stealing the items from local residences when interrogated at the Afienya Police Station.

Following his confession, he was formally charged with theft and taken into custody before being processed for court.

Dr. Samuel Eson, Regional Chief Manager of GWL for the Tema Region, welcomed the verdict, stating that the company has been grappling with frequent theft of water meters and related installations. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police.

He further warned scrap dealers and other individuals involved in such thefts that they will face severe legal consequences if caught.
