Agyekum, who was convicted by an Accra High Court in December 2002 on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, has already spent 23 years behind bars.
The Court of Appeal has scheduled June 5, 2025, to deliver its judgment on an appeal filed by Yaw Asante Agyekum, an alleged accomplice of infamous criminal Ataa Ayi, who is contesting his 35-year prison sentence.
Agyekum, who was convicted by an Accra High Court in December 2002 on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, has already spent 23 years behind bars.
At the time of his trial, he was unrepresented by legal counsel.
His current lawyer, George Bernard Shaw, contends that the conviction was based on tenuous evidence. According to Shaw, prosecutors failed to establish any direct involvement by Agyekum in the robberies associated with Ataa Ayi.
The only alleged connection, he argued, was the discovery of Ataa Ayi’s phone numbers stored on Agyekum’s mobile device.
Speaking to reporters after court proceedings on Monday, Shaw insisted that such evidence was insufficient to justify the heavy sentence, and he urged the Court of Appeal to overturn the earlier judgment.
