The suspects were arrested following sporadic shootings in the area.

Police in the Upper East Region say they have arrested18 suspects in Bawku following a recent shooting incident that led to the death of a Fulani horse trader.

Although the cause of the shooting incident is unknown yet, the deceased, 81-year-old Mohammed Bole was said to have been shot by unknown assailants while returning from Pusiga.

“We have arrested 18 people, and they are all under investigation and by close of today, Tuesday, they will be sent to court for further investigations,” Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Fianko-Okyere said.

The suspects haven’t been officially charged because the police say they are still gathering evidence.

“A swoop was conducted, and we are screening them. Possibly the evidence that we will get from them will determine the charges. So, let’s wait till we finish preparing the charges,” said.

The Bawku township is currently on curfew, following a resurgence of chieftaincy disputes since November 2021.

About 13 people were arrested and later granted bail when the Mamprusi chieftaincy faction attempted to perform the final funeral rites for a chief who died about 41 years ago despite a court injunction, stopping the planned activity.

The township has also been struck with a number of bans by authorities on concerns of insecurity.
