The District Magistrate Court in Tema has discharged the four men who had been charged in connection with her death.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Hilda Sarkodie, told the court on July 21 that after a detailed review of the case, the Attorney General's Department had advised against continuing the trial due to lack of credible evidence.
The accused—Richard Kwabena Kwakye (a.k.a. Kwabena Boateng), Dominic Owusu, Christian Adjei, and Frederick Owusu Oppong (a.k.a. Kojo Owusu)—were officially discharged by Magistrate Benedicta Antwi.
The deceased, Mrs.Josephine Asante, then the Marketing and PR Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) at Tema Port, was brutally killed in the early hours of January 13, 2019, shortly after returning home from a staff end-of-year dinner. She was 49.
Her lifeless body was discovered the following morning at her residence in EMEFS Estates along the Accra-Akosombo highway. The door to her bedroom had been locked from inside, and though nothing was stolen, the evidence pointed to a chilling and targeted act.
Family Speaks Out
The family’s response was swift—and emotional.
Franklin Kwame Asante, the widower, expressed disbelief that the state would dismiss a case despite what he describes as confessions and video evidence.
His brother-in-law, Robert Asante, added that the family would not let the matter rest. “After all these years, if the best the justice system can say is ‘insufficient evidence,’ we have serious questions. We are seeking legal advice. We will pursue this to the very end,” he stated.
