Investigators told the court that Torto allegedly collected GH¢5,325 and GH¢8,200 from victims between December 2025 and January 2026, claiming he could secure travel documents for them.

A Cape Coast Circuit Court has remanded Patrick Nii Torto into police custody over allegations that he used the name of the Office of the Vice President to defraud people with promises of Canadian visas and work permits.

Investigators told the court that Torto allegedly collected GH¢5,325 and GH¢8,200 from victims between December 2025 and January 2026, claiming he could secure travel documents for them.

To sell the story, he reportedly presented himself as a Vice President’s Office staffer and a captain in the Ghana Armed Forces, operating under the name "Dr. Patrick Nelson Ayittey” and claiming he had links to the Canadian Embassy in Ghana.

Police said he was arrested at a hideout at Abura after a complaint was lodged at the Abura Police Station on Monday, February 16.

He pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretence, but the court, presided over by Madam Nana Aba Quiaba Nunoo, remanded him to help with ongoing investigations.

Items found and verification checks

A search at his residence allegedly uncovered about 10 Ghanaian passports and other documents, including:

school certificates

birth certificates

Ghana Cards

Police further said checks showed he is not:

a member of the Ghana Armed Forces

a worker at the Vice President’s Office

affiliated with the Canadian Embassy

a medical doctor or a doctoral degree holder
