A 29-year-old man has been remanded into custody after appearing before the Adabraka District Court over the death of his uncle, who prosecutors say was fatally struck with a pestle during a family dispute.
The accused, Abass Issah, did not take a plea when he was brought before the court. The matter was adjourned to 16 April 2026, with the court ordering that he remain in lawful custody.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Sandra Amarkye, asked the court to remand him while police continue their investigations.
According to the case presented in court, the complainant is Issah Amadu, the accused’s father. Both father and son are said to be unemployed and live in Kanda, Accra.
The deceased, Fudu Abdulai, was a carpenter and the accused’s uncle. He lived at Afuamah-Ablekuma.
Prosecutors say the fatal incident took place on 15 March 2026 when Abdulai visited his elder sister, Ayisha Abdulai, at her boutique along the Kanda Highway. He was accompanied by his six-year-old son.
The court heard that while Abdulai was sitting outside the shop speaking with his sister, the accused came out from a nearby house attached to the boutique. On seeing his uncle, he allegedly went back inside, picked up a club-shaped pestle used for pounding spices, and returned.
The prosecution says he then struck Abdulai from behind.
The blow reportedly landed on the back of the deceased’s head, causing a deep wound and leaving him bleeding heavily before he collapsed unconscious.
Ayisha Abdulai, who is both the mother of the accused and sister of the deceased, is said to have rushed out after hearing a scream and saw her son running away with the pestle.
Abdulai was taken to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and admitted for treatment. But the following morning, at about 7:00am on 16 March, he died while still receiving care.
Police say the accused went into hiding after the incident but was arrested three days later, on 18 March 2026.
During questioning, prosecutors say, Issah admitted hitting his uncle and claimed he acted against a background of an existing feud, alleging that the deceased had threatened to “put him down”.
The prosecution told the court that a duplicate docket would be prepared and sent to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.
