A Winneba Magistrate Court has remanded into police custody Joshua Karry Arthur, the main suspect in the shocking murder of Professor Mawuadem Amedeker, a senior academic at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
Arthur was arrested at the professor’s Gyahadze residence in the Effutu Municipality on Thursday, May 22, during an ongoing police investigation into the lecturer’s mysterious disappearance. He was subsequently brought before the court while investigations continued.
Professor Amedeker had been missing for several weeks under troubling and unexplained circumstances, prompting concerned family members and university staff to report the matter to law enforcement. After extensive efforts by the police, his body was discovered buried in a shallow grave just meters from his home. The remains were exhumed and transferred to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for autopsy and further examination.
During Arthur’s arrest, police recovered several items belonging to the deceased, including a 50-inch television, two Samsung smartphones, a laptop, and the keys to a Toyota Fortuner, intensifying suspicion of his involvement in the case.
The tragic discovery has left the Gyahadze community reeling with grief and fear. In response, officers from the Effutu Divisional Police Command have been deployed to the area to calm residents and maintain order.
Divisional Commander ACP Ibrahim Opoku, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, explained that his office was first alerted to the lecturer’s disappearance by UEW officials on Wednesday, May 21. Acting swiftly, officers began combing the area and initially brought in a young man for questioning. However, upon returning the next day, the man had vanished.
A renewed search led police to the backyard of Prof. Amedeker’s house, where his buried remains were found. The discovery has raised strong suspicions of foul play, now being investigated as a premeditated murder.
Residents, still shaken by the grim developments, have called for justice as police continue their investigations into the circumstances of the killing.
