An Accra Circuit Court has ordered that 44-year-old driver, Stephen Namtey, be kept in police custody after he was accused of taking part in the robbery of a Kia Rhino truck at Amasaman Junction.
Namtey has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. When brought before the court, he admitted to the facts but offered an explanation.
However, presiding judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah held that his statement amounted to a legal defence and therefore entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
The matter was adjourned to September 18.
Leading the prosecution, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye told the court that the complainant, Abdul Jalilu, a driver living at Abossey Okai Zongo, had been in search of a vehicle when he noticed the Kia Rhino with a “for sale” notice and a phone contact.
According to the prosecution, the truck’s lawful owner, who is a witness in the case, had put it up for sale in July. Jalilu reached out to Namtey who presented himself as the seller and the two agreed to meet at Amasaman Junction to inspect the vehicle.
On August 30, Jalilu went to the meeting point with his mechanic. Following discussions, they agreed on a purchase price of GH₵85,000. Namtey is said to have accepted the money, handed over the truck’s documents, and then asked to travel with them to Suhum. Jalilu consented.
DSP Nyamekye recounted that while on the journey, three men stopped the vehicle. Namtey allegedly persuaded Jalilu to pick them up, describing them as his friends. Once they boarded, the mechanic and Jalilu were dragged out of the truck by the men with Namtey allegedly aiding them.
The suspects then sped off with the vehicle. Police investigations led to Namtey’s arrest on September 9, when he was found with the missing truck. During interrogation, he admitted meeting Jalilu but denied conducting the sale.
The prosecution added that his accomplices remain at large, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.
