The suspect, Benjamin Osei Sarpong, a 44-year-old driver from Odorkor, is facing two charges of defrauding by false pretence.

A man accused of taking GH¢58,000 from two siblings under the pretext of arranging Canadian visas has been ordered into remand custody by the Achimota Court.

The suspect, Benjamin Osei Sarpong, a 44-year-old driver from Odorkor, is facing two charges of defrauding by false pretence. Prosecutors say he collected GH¢30,000 from a police officer and GH¢28,000 from a teacher after allegedly promising to facilitate their travel arrangements.

According to investigators, the siblings first explored the idea of travelling to Canada in October 2023. They were later introduced to Sarpong by a friend who claimed he could secure the visas. After several engagements with the family, Sarpong allegedly took the money but failed to deliver on his assurances.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Ahiale told the court that Sarpong had been instructed to appear on 19 June 2025, but did not show up, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant.

Police say it took more than five months to track him down.

Sarpong, however, insisted in court that he was unwell and had travelled to Sefwi Yamfo, where he claimed poor mobile network prevented him from receiving calls. He also maintained that he only became aware of the court matter “four days ago”.

He appeared in court with GH¢10,000, which he said he intended to pay towards the outstanding amount.

But the trial judge, after checking official records, confirmed that the court had sat on 19 June and that Sarpong was not present—contradicting his claim.

During police questioning, Sarpong reportedly admitted taking the funds but said he had passed the money on to the late John Kumah, former MP for Ejisu. He claimed the transaction was done with the knowledge of the MP’s widow. According to the prosecution, he has been unable to help investigators locate her.

After considering the submissions, the court ordered that Sarpong be kept in lawful custody. He is scheduled to make his next appearance on 3 December 2025.
