Eleven individuals — four Chinese nationals and seven Ghanaians — have been apprehended by the Western Central Regional Police Command for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities near the Bonsa River and Wassa Agona.

The arrests followed a targeted operation on March 31, 2025, around midday, acting on credible intelligence aimed at clamping down on illegal mining in the area.

At the Bonsa River location, five individuals were taken into custody: Wei Qinwei, 43; Yao Yongji, 40; Nsoh Oto, also known as Agologo, 43; Kwadwo George, also known as Sergio, 20; and Emmanuel Van, also called Atta or AT, 20.

At a separate site near Wassa Agona, six more suspects were arrested. These included Nuang Shichuan, 46; Huang Xinbao, 52; Douglas Ayambilla, 19; Elvis Aborta, 21; Michael Tettey Komlorm, 34; and Ibrahim Dauda, 23.

According to police reports, all suspects admitted to participating in illegal mining. They are currently in custody, assisting with further investigations.

Authorities also revealed that four excavators used at the Wassa Agona site have not yet been recovered. A search is underway to locate and seize the machinery for use as evidence.

The suspects are expected to be prosecuted once investigations are finalized and all relevant documentation and evidence are compiled.
