Dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, is in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing probe into the ownership and tax obligations of a luxury Lamborghini Urus.
According to a statement released by his management, the musician voluntarily appeared at EOCO headquarters on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in the company of his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo. His legal team is said to be engaging with investigators in a bid to secure his release.
The management of the “SM Family” hitmaker appealed to fans to remain calm and avoid spreading speculation, assuring them that all legal processes are being followed. Further discussions between his lawyers and EOCO officials are expected in the coming days.
Shatta Wale’s detention follows the earlier seizure of the bright yellow Lamborghini Urus in early August 2025. The operation, carried out jointly by EOCO and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), alleged that the car was linked to an international fraud ring and had been stolen abroad.
Authorities say the seizure was conducted under the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804) and the Mutual Legal Assistance Act, 2010 (Act 807), which empower EOCO to freeze or confiscate assets tied to serious crime—even when the alleged offences originate outside Ghana.
EOCO, which frequently collaborates with INTERPOL and international security agencies, maintains that the luxury vehicle is part of a broader investigation into fraud and money laundering networks.
Meanwhile, news of the artist’s detention has sparked heated debate on social media, with fans voicing both concern for Shatta Wale’s plight and criticism of the circumstances surrounding the seizure.
