A former parliamentary candidate in Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, has been remanded in custody in the US state of Pennsylvania after being charged in connection with the stabbing of a woman during a domestic dispute, police say.

The Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police said officers were called to a home on Mayfair Drive, near Harrisburg, at about 10:00 on Saturday, 17 January, and found the woman with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to hospital by first responders and was later listed in a stable condition, police added.

Mr Nortey, 41, faces charges including criminal attempt – homicide, possessing an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, according to police and court-related updates.

Online court records cited by Ghanaian media indicate he was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy, who denied him bail. Police say he is being held at Dauphin County Prison ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for 26 January, when a judge will decide whether the case should proceed to a higher court.
