A 19-year-old farmer, Daniel Mahama, has been fined GH₵4,800 by the Toase Magistrate Court for stealing five sacks of ginger estimated at GH₵17,500. The incident occurred at Gyankobaa, a farming community in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.
Mahama pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and was convicted based on his own admission. Should he fail to pay the fine, he will serve a 12-month prison sentence as a substitute.
During the hearing, Police Detective Chief Inspector Ntim Boadu, who led the prosecution, explained to the court—presided over by Mr. Robert Addo—that both the accused and the complainant, Mary Appiah, are farmers living in Gyankobaa.
The prosecution recounted how the complainant’s sons had previously informed her of Mahama’s repeated harvesting of her ginger crops. Acting on their tip, she visited her farm on March 21 and caught Mahama in the act. She immediately reported the matter to the Toase police.
Upon his arrest, Mahama confessed in his caution statement and disclosed that he had sold the stolen ginger to an unidentified woman, whose name he could not provide. After police investigations, he was formally charged and brought before the court for prosecution.
