Ghana’s government has formally asked the United States to extradite former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his former aide Ernest Darko Akore to stand trial on corruption-related charges.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dominic Ayine confirmed the development on Thursday, 18 December, during the Government Accountability Series briefing.
He said the request followed the completion of all documentation and clarifications received from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which has filed 78 counts of alleged corruption and corruption-related offences against the two men.
“This step was taken after my office received the necessary documentation and clarifications from the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” Dr Ayine said, adding that his ministry had “completed its part” by transmitting the request to US authorities.
He explained that the matter now lies with the American courts.
“It is now in the hands of the US judicial authorities to ascertain whether the threshold for extradition has been met,” he noted.
The Attorney-General stressed that the government remains committed to accountability and due process, and will continue to work with international partners in line with Ghanaian and US extradition laws.
