An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 29-year-old man to three years in prison after he confessed to stealing two industrial sewing machines, each valued at GH¢5,000, from a warehouse at Spintex.
The convict, Mohammed Salisu, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft. His co-accused, Mahama Shitu, was acquitted after Salisu admitted he acted alone and had only enlisted Shitu’s help in transporting the stolen items.
Presiding judge Samuel Bright Acquah cleared Shitu of conspiracy and unlawful entry charges based on Salisu’s admission.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Shiela Tetteh, the complainant—a businesswoman based in Sakumono—had previously employed Salisu as a supervisor at her bakery and restaurant. Salisu resided in Nungua at the time, while Shitu, a tailor, also lived nearby in Adegonno.
Inspector Tetteh recounted that in October 2024, the complainant reported the theft of a "Motor King" tricycle worth GH¢39,000, with Salisu as the prime suspect. He was arrested and granted bail.
However, on the night of his release, Salisu returned to the complainant’s warehouse using a spare key and stole the two sewing machines before fleeing the area.
Police struggled to locate Salisu until February 28, 2025, when CCTV footage showed Shitu in his company. Shitu was arrested and led authorities to Agona Swedru, where Salisu had taken refuge. Though Salisu initially escaped, he was later apprehended on March 3, 2025, in Nungua.
In his confession, Salisu revealed he had sold the machines in Togo for GH¢2,000 but could not identify the buyer. Shitu maintained he was unaware the machines were stolen.
