Four people have been arrested after a violent clash at a funeral in Asamankese left six civilians and three police officers injured, the Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed.

The incident occurred during the burial and funeral rites of six family members on Sunday, October 26, 2025, and quickly spiralled into chaos.

According to a statement signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the police acted on intelligence that some individuals were moving guns and cartridges into a room near the chief’s palace.

A team dispatched to the scene reportedly retrieved one single-barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives.

The suspects — identified as Isaac Ntim, Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam, 29, and Buaben Richard, 25 — were taken into custody.

But their arrest provoked a violent reaction from some youth, who hurled stones and other objects at the officers, injuring three of them in the process. Two police vehicles were also damaged in the confrontation.

The disturbance soon spread through parts of the town as groups of youth reportedly fired guns and blocked roads around the Asamankese–Akroso junction and near the chief’s palace.

Police say the violence stemmed from a dispute over whether the deceased could be buried in the royal cemetery.

Six civilians — including 28-year-old David Odame, 29-year-old Musah Gyakweli, and three teenagers — sustained gunshot wounds. Another victim remains unidentified. All have been admitted to the Asamankese Government Hospital for treatment.

Authorities say calm has since returned to the area.
“The situation has been normalised and Asamankese Township is calm,” the police statement said.

The Command added that patrols and surveillance have been intensified to prevent further unrest.
“The public is assured that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property so people can go about their normal duties,” the statement concluded.
