The individuals—Li Quan (44), Lu Jianzhong (36), Li Xueyu (47), and Su Shanxiang (63)—face multiple charges including conspiracy to mine without a license, illegal mining, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Four Chinese nationals arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region have been remanded into police custody for two weeks by the Bekwai Circuit Court.

The individuals—Li Quan (44), Lu Jianzhong (36), Li Xueyu (47), and Su Shanxiang (63)—face multiple charges including conspiracy to mine without a license, illegal mining, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. While Li Quan and Lu Jianzhong are identified as miners, Li Xueyu is a mechanic, and Su Shanxiang served as their cook.

A fifth suspect, known only as Lee, remains on the run.

Police prosecutor ASP Lloyd Baidoo told the court that the suspects were apprehended on July 27, 2025, during a joint operation at Old Atatam in the Adansi Asokwa District. The raid, led by the CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, was supported by officers from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command.

Authorities say the suspects were caught actively mining along the Subin and Jimi Rivers. During the arrest, four semi-automatic pump-action guns and twenty live cartridges were recovered at the scene. Eleven excavators were found on the site—four of them disabled, with parts removed, and seven transported to the regional police headquarters, where they were impounded.

In statements made during police interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted to their involvement and named the fugitive Lee as the one who hired them.

Prosecutors say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to locate and arrest the fifth suspect.
