The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the arrest of a suspected gunman during a cordon-and-search operation in Binduri, part of its heightened security measures aimed at restoring peace in the Bawku area.

In a statement released by the GAF, the military disclosed that the operation was initiated early Monday morning after troops stationed in Binduri heard intermittent gunfire from the vicinity of the Binduri Central Market.

Responding swiftly, personnel from the 11 Mechanised Battalion, the Joint Task Force, and the Ghana Police Service moved in to secure the area. A comprehensive search was then conducted to locate individuals responsible for the gunfire.

"One suspected gunman was apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation," the statement confirmed.

Security personnel also uncovered a stockpile of weapons and military gear, which included an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of mixed M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 G3 rounds, an empty M16 magazine, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, boots, and a helmet.

Later that day, the military foiled another infiltration attempt by unidentified armed men. A gun battle erupted between the assailants and the security forces, eventually forcing the attackers to flee. Calm has since been restored in the area.

The GAF assured the public that patrols have been intensified and security forces remain on high alert to prevent further disturbances.

“We are collaborating with all security agencies to safeguard the peace and stability of the region,” the statement said, while appealing to residents for cooperation to ensure lasting calm.
