Officers in the Eastern Region say they carried out an undercover operation after receiving a tip-off that a father was looking for buyers because of financial hardship.

Police in Ghana’s Eastern Region have arrested a man accused of trying to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1m, according to local media reports.

The suspect, identified as Coffie Agyemang and said to be a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District, was picked up by the Akwatia Police Command after what officers described as intelligence-led surveillance.

Reports say the man allegedly shared his plans with a friend, blaming acute financial pressure. The information was then passed to the police, who moved to test the claim through an undercover operation.

Officers are said to have posed as prospective buyers and arranged a meeting, during which the suspect allegedly agreed to a price of GH¢1m. He was arrested after bringing the child to the agreed location, police sources told the media.

Police said there are also claims the child was to be killed for ritual purposes, with the body later returned to the suspect as “proof” of what had happened. They stressed these claims form part of ongoing investigations.

The child has been placed in protective custody while inquiries continue, according to the reports.
