Police in Accra have arrested a man filmed assaulting a woman believed to be his wife, following the circulation of a widely-condemned Facebook video.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 18 November, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) confirmed that John Odartey Lamptey was detained on Monday at his home in Ofankor, in the Ga East municipality. The arrest came after the clip sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections against domestic abuse.

According to the CID, two of the suspect’s siblings — Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey — were also taken into custody. Police say the pair attempted to attack a female tenant they believed had recorded and shared the footage online. Officers intervened and removed the tenant to ensure her safety.

Authorities say efforts are currently underway to trace and safeguard the victim, who fled the residence before police arrived.

The viral video has triggered a strong online reaction, with many Ghanaians demanding swift justice and improved measures to protect women and vulnerable individuals from domestic violence.
