Asare was found guilty of causing unlawful damage under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29).

The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced Yaw Asare, a 48-year-old head porter, to two years in prison for vandalising sections of the newly built Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra.

Asare was found guilty of causing unlawful damage under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29). He was arrested on June 9, 2025, after deliberately destroying parapet beams and accessories on the interchange, which had only recently been completed. He is to serve his term at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

In a statement reacting to the ruling, the Ministry of Roads and Highways condemned the act, describing it as part of a worrying rise in vandalism of public road facilities, including traffic lights and other installations.

The Ministry warned that such behaviour amounts to a criminal offence and vowed to intensify collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to track, arrest, and prosecute perpetrators.
