The Ministry, in a June 10 statement, said the decision affirms that health professionals must be protected while performing their duties.

A court ruling against a man who assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been welcomed by the Ministry of Health as a warning to persons who attack health workers.

Desmond Bosomtwe was convicted by the Community 22 District Court after he was found guilty of assaulting senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo.

The Ministry, in a June 10 statement, said the decision affirms that health professionals must be protected while performing their duties.

Bosomtwe was fined 100 penalty units, amounting to GH¢1,200.

The court also ordered him to pay GH¢5,000 as compensation to the midwife.

He was further barred from visiting the Community 22 Polyclinic for one year and required to sign a bond to be of good behaviour.

The case arose from an incident on June 2, 2026, after official visiting hours at the facility had ended.

Ms Addo, who was on duty, reportedly asked visitors to leave in line with hospital rules.

Bosomtwe, said to be a relative of a patient, refused to comply.

What began as a disagreement later turned physical.

A video of the assault was circulated on social media, prompting public concern and calls for action.

The Ministry said the conviction should make clear that violence in health facilities will attract legal consequences.

It also praised the Ghana Police Service for investigating the matter and ensuring that the accused was prosecuted.

According to the Ministry, safety within health facilities is essential to effective healthcare delivery.

It said no doctor, nurse, midwife or other health worker should be exposed to abuse while serving patients.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to measures that promote accountability, professionalism and a safe working environment for health personnel.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association also welcomed the swift conclusion of the case.

The Association, however, said it had hoped for a stiffer punishment to send a stronger deterrent message.
