Mohammed Bello, one of the suspects behind a highway robbery along the Dabanyin stretch of the Winneba Highway, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labour by the Kasoa-Ofaakor Circuit Court.
The robbery occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025, when Bello and four accomplices ambushed a Toyota Hiace vehicle near Gomoa Buduatta Junction, opening fire and injuring four passengers. The attackers made away with cash, mobile phones, and other valuables.
Bello was swiftly arrested by officers from the Gomoa East District Police Command as he tried to escape the scene. He was later transferred to the Central East Regional Police Command, where he was charged, tried, and convicted.
During his arrest, Bello was found in possession of:
GH₵3,740 in cash
Two Samsung phones
Tecno Spark 20
Itel keypad phone
Power bank, phone charger, wristwatch, headset
Lady’s purse, five sticks of cigarettes, and a pair of sandals identified by one of the victims.
A police statement confirmed that his accomplices remain at large, but efforts to locate and arrest them are ongoing.
“We assure the public of our continued commitment to ensuring safety and bringing criminals to justice,” the police said.
The four injured victims have since received medical care and have praised the police for their prompt response.
Authorities are urging any other victims of the attack to come forward and assist with investigations. Police say they will stop at nothing to ensure the rest of the gang is brought to justice.
