The Ministry of the Interior has directed that two separate investigations be launched, following claims that the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, has survived assassination attempts and that a senior official at his office was brutalised by police officers.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the move was triggered by comments made by the Director of Research, Communications and Strategy at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Mr Samuel (Sammy) Appiah Darko, on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 6 December 2025.
On the show, Mr Darko alleged that:
Mr Agyebeng had survived two assassination attempts while carrying out his mandate as Special Prosecutor; and
He (Darko) had, on a separate occasion, been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.
The Ministry quoted him in its statement, noting that he “mentioned the assassination attempt on Newsfile, a television station in Accra, on December 6, 2025” and that on the same programme he “claimed … that he had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.”
The Ministry described these allegations as deeply troubling, stressing that if threats or attacks against officials of accountability institutions are confirmed, they would represent a serious danger to the country’s anti-corruption drive, which government has committed itself to strengthening.
The statement further indicated that initial engagement with Mr Agyebeng suggests the alleged assassination attempts occurred before 2025. However, the Ministry said there is no record of any such threats having been officially reported at any police station or to any state security agency.
In response, the Minister for the Interior has issued two clear directives:
The Ministry has instructed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted into the alleged attempts on the life of the Special Prosecutor, stressing that “crime does not expire”.
A distinct investigation has also been ordered into Mr Darko’s claim that he was handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers.
“The Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts. The Ministry has also ordered an investigation into the claim by Mr Samuel Appiah Darko that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel,” the statement said.
The Ministry noted that the public will be updated once the investigations are concluded and any consequent actions have been determined.
Reaffirming its core mandate, it emphasised its commitment to ensuring that all persons in Ghana are able to go about their lawful activities without fear.
