A 26-year-old corn miller accused of planning to set fire to shops at Accra’s Kantamanto Market has been granted bail by Circuit Court Three.
The court, presided over by Mrs Susanna Eduful, admitted Kwame Asare to GH¢200,000 bail with two sureties, both of whom must be close family members earning not less than GH¢1,500 a month.
Asare has been charged with preparation to commit a crime – causing unlawful damage and has pleaded not guilty. He is expected back in court on 27 January 2026.
Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo said the complainants are National Security operatives. He told the court that Asare, who works as a corn miller at Kantamanto, was arrested on 9 December by a team led by Simon Nyala after intelligence suggested he was planning to burn shops in the market.
During interrogation, Asare allegedly claimed some traders in the area had been “worrying him”, and that he had therefore decided to set their shops ablaze.
Officers later searched his room within the market and reportedly found a gallon containing several litres of petrol, which was seized as evidence.
Chief Inspector Teye-Okuffo said investigations are still underway and Asare was charged and brought before the court following the initial inquiries.
