Six individuals have been remanded by the Kasoa Ofaakor Circuit Court following a violent altercation between police officers and some traders at the Gomoa Dominase Onion Market in Ghana’s Central Region.
The suspects were arrested during a recent law enforcement operation aimed at flushing out drug dealers and suspected criminals from the area. Some of those apprehended were found in possession of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, while others allegedly interfered with police duties during the raid.
Violence Erupts During Security Operation
The operation, led by security personnel, quickly turned chaotic. In the ensuing clash, one person was killed and three security officers sustained injuries. According to officials, one of the injured officers has been treated and discharged, while the other two remain under medical care.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the deceased, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
District Authorities Respond
Commenting on the incident, Gomoa East District Chief Executive (DCE) Naana Ackom told Citi News on Tuesday, May 27, that the local security apparatus is intensifying its efforts to restore calm and crack down on criminal activity in the district.
“The District Security Council is closely monitoring developments and will not hesitate to take the necessary actions to safeguard law and order,” she said.
She also appealed to residents and traditional leaders to collaborate with authorities, emphasizing that maintaining peace in the district is a shared responsibility.
“The Gomoa East District Assembly remains committed to ensuring law and order. We call on residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the assembly’s efforts,” she added.
Way Forward
The six suspects are expected to reappear in court as investigations progress. Meanwhile, security presence in and around the onion market has reportedly been increased to prevent further disturbances.
