The Ghana Police Service has made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, arresting a key suspect believed to have played a role in his death.

The suspect, a former close associate of the deceased, is accused of betraying Suale by leaking his photographs to a prominent Ghanaian politician before his assassination.

Ahmed Suale, known for his work with Tiger Eye Private Investigations and collaboration with the BBC, was fatally shot near his home in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unknown gunmen. The newly apprehended suspect was previously dismissed from Tiger Eye PI before fleeing the country to evade police scrutiny.

Identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, the suspect reportedly left Ghana under disguise when authorities began linking him to the crime. His arrest follows intelligence gathered from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which analyzed phone records showing communication between him and the deceased in the days leading up to the murder. Suale’s mobile devices were sent to the U.S. as part of the ongoing investigation.

A police source revealed that Amakye, who previously visited Suale frequently at his Madina residence, relocated to the UK to escape authorities. However, he discreetly returned to Ghana last week, leading to his capture at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.

Ahmed Suale’s assassination followed his team's groundbreaking exposé on corruption in African football, particularly within Ghana’s football industry. His murder remains one of the most high-profile attacks on investigative journalism in the country.
