Fatawu Amponsah, 25, who also works as a driver’s mate, was convicted by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court after pleading guilty.

A level 200 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbing a hairdresser in the Abuakwa area of the Atwima Nwabiagya North District.

Fatawu Amponsah, 25, who also works as a driver’s mate, was convicted by the Asante Akropong Circuit Court after pleading guilty. The case was presided over by Her Honour Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

The prosecuting officer, Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, told the court that the victim, Juliet Nyarko, is a hairdressing apprentice living in Abuakwa-Asenemaso, while the convict resides nearby at SDA Junction.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on June 16, when Nyarko was on her way home from town. Amponsah trailed her along a quiet section of the road and demanded her iPhone 11, valued at GH¢3,000.

When Nyarko refused, Amponsah pulled out a kitchen knife and violently attacked her. He beat her until she became too weak to resist, shoved her to the ground, snatched the phone, and fled, leaving her injured and crying out for help.

Her screams attracted residents, who quickly mobilized, pursued the assailant, and managed to apprehend him. He was handed over to the Abuakwa Police.

In his caution statement, Amponsah confessed to the crime. After police investigations, he was formally charged and brought before the court, where he received a 10-year custodial sentence.
