A High Court in Kumasi has handed a life sentence to Dominic Afriyie, popularly known by his alias “GH,” for the murder of a local pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu. In addition to the life sentence, the 36-year-old was sentenced to 120 years with hard labour for committing two counts of robbery.
The verdict was delivered after a full trial presided over by His Honour Abdul Razak, with a seven-member jury unanimously finding Afriyie guilty despite his plea of innocence.
Deadly Break-In Leaves Community Reeling
The violent incident occurred on November 20, 2021, when Afriyie forcefully entered Mr. Klu’s residence in Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi. Armed with a weapon, he robbed the victim and his household of two mobile phones, a laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash. The invasion ended in tragedy when he shot and killed the 43-year-old homeowner.
Weeks later, on December 30, 2021, police acting on intelligence learned of a planned robbery targeting the same neighborhood. A swift surveillance operation led to the interception of a Toyota Corolla at around 2:20 a.m. the following day. Afriyie was arrested alongside three other individuals.
During the search of the vehicle, officers recovered two pistols and a pair of single-barrelled shotguns. However, investigators later confirmed that Afriyie had acted alone in the fatal November attack.
