A 24-year-old labourer, James Mensah, has been remanded into prison custody by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court for allegedly stealing five mobile phones at Asakraka, near Abuakwa, in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

Mensah, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing, is expected to reappear before presiding judge Jephthah Appau on October 3, 2025.

According to Police Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa, the complainants—Richard Opoku, Francis Mensah, John Bonayaa, and William Yenkyeibe—are small-scale miners living at Asakraka. The accused worked as a labourer at a cottage near their mining site.

On September 8, 2025, the miners kept their phones—a iPhone 13, two iPhone 12 Pro Max, a Samsung Galaxy S21, and a Samsung A8—all valued at GH¢35,700, in a bag while they worked. Later, they found the bag abandoned in the bush, empty. Mensah was spotted earlier roaming near the spot but disappeared from the area soon after.

Mensah was later found at Asakraka, arrested, and handed over to the Atwima Kokoben Police. In his caution statement, he admitted the theft, saying he:

Sold two phones for GH¢1,050,

Swapped one for an Infinix handset at Adum-PZ,

Spent the proceeds.

He, however, could not help police trace the buyers, described as dishonest receivers.

Following investigations, Mensah was charged and put before the court.
