Police said that around 10:00 a.m. on February 17, Abigail Dzikunu, accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed, reported that an unknown woman posed as a nurse and took a newborn from the ward.

The Dansoman Police Command has arrested Latifa Salifu over the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital in Accra.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, Accra Regional Police Public Affairs head Superintendent Juliana Obeng said the arrest followed fast-tracked investigations and support from the public after the case was reported on Tuesday, February 17.

Police said that around 10:00 a.m. on February 17, Abigail Dzikunu, accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed, reported that an unknown woman posed as a nurse and took a newborn from the ward.

The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered on February 14, 2026, said the woman wore a peach-coloured nurse uniform and carried the baby away, claiming she was taking him to be given medication, but never returned.

Police said officers visited the hospital, took statements, and began a search. At about 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, they arrested Latifa Salifu, 33, a cloth seller, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with a baby believed to be the missing child.

The suspect told police she had delivered at Korle Bu and was discharged because she wasn’t being cared for, but police say hospital records do not support her story.

The suspect remains in custody while police continue investigations. The baby is being placed under hospital care for safekeeping and medical checks as the case progresses.
