Police have arrested a man suspected of assaulting a landlady who later died following a dispute at Agona Nyakrom in Ghana’s Central Region.

The suspect, known as Paa Kwesi, is the grandson of a tenant in the house where the incident occurred. He allegedly went into hiding after the death of the landlady, Madam Charlotte, but was picked up at a hideout after an intelligence-led operation.

Police say he is now in custody and being questioned. He is reported to have told investigators that what happened was an accident.

The case arose after Madam Charlotte confronted a tenant over a bag of human waste dumped in front of her room in their shared compound. The tenant is said to have explained that she had suffered a sudden stomach upset and could not reach a public toilet in time.

Although the confrontation initially ended without any physical altercation, tensions reportedly flared later when the tenant accused the landlady of spreading the story in the community. The tenant then allegedly phoned her grandson, Paa Kwesi, to come to the house.

On arriving, the suspect is reported to have lashed the landlady with a belt. Her condition deteriorated shortly afterwards, with relatives linking the episode to her existing high blood pressure.

She was first taken to the Nyakrom Health Centre and later transferred to another facility, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body has been sent to the Agona Swedru Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
