Police in Accra have arrested a 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, for allegedly pulling a gun on a police investigator after a court hearing.

In a statement dated 7 February, the Accra Regional Police Command said the arrest followed an incident at the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, 3 February. Welbeck, who was in court over a separate forgery case, had been served with a summons to appear before the court.

Police said that after the hearing, he was being escorted towards the court cells when he asked for permission to lock his car. Officers said he then took a pistol from the vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening him.

The police identified the weapon as a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol, allegedly loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition. They said the investigator, with help from court officials and other witnesses, quickly disarmed him.

Welbeck is in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be put before the court.

The Accra Regional Police Command also warned the public against threats, violence and unlawful possession of firearms, and urged people to follow court procedures and cooperate with law enforcement.
