A Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced 24-year-old Sumaila Abubakar to 15 years in prison for defiling an eight-year-old girl.

The judgment, delivered by His Honour Festus Fovi Nukunu, came after Abubakar pleaded guilty to defilement, a violation of Section 101 (2) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended.

Detective Inspector S.K. Oppong, leading the prosecution, recounted that the incident occurred on October 26, 2024, in Achiase, a community in the Kwabre East Municipality where both the victim and the accused reside.

The court heard that the victim and her younger brother were playing near a mosque when Abubakar lured the girl into an unfinished building and assaulted her.

The younger brother, realizing something was wrong, alerted a nearby elderly man. Although the man rushed to intervene, Abubakar fled the scene before he could be apprehended.
