A 38-year-old unemployed man, Thomas Kwabena Vordzorgbe, has been sentenced to six years in prison by an Accra Circuit Court for robbing a resident of Nungua of an Itel mobile phone worth GH¢350.
Vordzorgbe, who denied the robbery charge, was found guilty after a full trial before Judge Basilia Adjei-Tawiah. The court heard that he used a machete to attack the victim, a Nigerian national living in Nungua Cocoa Beach, and forcibly took his phone.
According to Chief Inspector John Gohoho, the incident occurred in the early hours of November 12, 2022, after the complainant left a social gathering around 3:00 a.m. As he made his way home, Vordzorgbe reportedly followed him and demanded his belongings. When the victim resisted, he was slashed on the left hand, forcing him to surrender his phone.
Later that evening, the victim was tipped off that someone was attempting to sell his stolen phone at the Nungua Lorry Station. With the help of others, he located and identified Vordzorgbe, who was immediately arrested. A search of the suspect revealed the stolen phone in his possession.
In his caution statement, Vordzorgbe confessed to the crime, sealing his fate in court.
