Police in the Obuasi East Municipality have opened a homicide investigation after a man was killed during a violent break-in at his home in the Asonkore SSNIT community in the early hours of Saturday, 13 December.
The victim, 42-year-old Bismark Yaw Sarfo Danso, was attacked and fatally wounded inside his residence by unidentified intruders.
According to initial police briefings, the incident occurred between 1:30am and 2:00am, when a gang of three armed men forcefully entered the house.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr Danso’s wife, Comfort Mensah, recounted how the assailants gained access, ransacked the home and then carried out the attack.
The men reportedly escaped with cash, a laptop and other valuables, leading investigators to initially treat the case as an armed robbery. However, the killing of Mr Danso has now elevated the matter to a priority murder inquiry.
The Obuasi Divisional Police Command has confirmed that a close relative of the deceased—his younger brother—has been detained to assist with investigations.
The swift arrest suggests detectives are not limiting their focus to external assailants but are also examining possible internal dynamics or complicity within the family circle.
Mr Danso’s body has been taken to a mortuary in the Ashanti Region for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
Obuasi East, home to the AngloGold Ashanti mining operations, has long grappled with crime linked to economic pressures. Even so, the Asonkore SSNIT area is generally regarded as a relatively secure residential zone, heightening local shock at the killing.
The Divisional Command is appealing to residents who may have seen or heard anything on the night of the incident to come forward. Police say any credible information could be critical to tracking down the attackers and securing justice for the slain father.
