A district court at Asante Akropong has remanded a 36-year-old unemployed man after he was accused of defrauding a commercial driver in a fake vehicle sale scheme.
Yaw Owusu Sekyere, who denies the charge of defrauding by false pretence, is expected back in court on 26 November. The case is being heard by magistrate Emmanuel Wiafe Adu.
Prosecutors told the court that the complainant, Dominic Mensah, a driver based in Kumasi-Apatrapa, had been searching for a vehicle when his brother introduced him to the accused.
Sekyere, who lived at Abuakwa-CMB, reportedly claimed he had access to a Nissan Murano for sale and showed the complainant photos and video clips of the car. He allegedly quoted a price of GH¢15,000, saying the vehicle was in Accra.
The complainant is said to have paid GH¢10,000 as a deposit.
According to the prosecution, the accused later insisted that the vehicle’s supposed owner was demanding the outstanding GH¢5,000 before releasing the car. The complainant declined to proceed with the purchase and subsequently discovered the vehicle had not been cleared by customs.
When he demanded a refund, Sekyere allegedly vanished and could not be traced for months.
He was finally spotted on 9 November 2025 in Abuakwa, apprehended by residents and handed over to the police.
Investigators told the court that in his caution statement, Sekyere admitted taking the money but claimed it had been given to someone in Accra—though he did not assist the police in locating the individual.
After completing their inquiries, officers charged him and presented him before the court.
