Awuku pleaded guilty to unlawfully damaging the vehicle and received the sentence accordingly.

An Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced a 32-year-old mason, Senyo Awuku, to three years of hard labor for causing irreparable damage to a Donfeng Ex-Box vehicle valued at $35,900, owned by Hisense Company Limited.

Awuku pleaded guilty to unlawfully damaging the vehicle and received the sentence accordingly. However, he denied allegations of breaking into the residence of the complainant, Mr. Gad Ebenezer Afranie Kisi, and stealing both the vehicle and other items, including an HP laptop worth GH₵4,300 and GH₵4,000 in cash.

The court, presided over by Ms. Enid Marful-Sau, scheduled March 13, 2025, for him to respond to the additional charges of unlawful entry and theft.

Incident Details

Presenting the case, Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru explained that the complainant, an employee of Hisense Company's Customer Service department, resided at Danchira Ocloo Farms, while Awuku lived in Hobor, a suburb of Accra.

On January 30, 2025, the complainant returned from work and parked his company-issued Donfeng Ex-Box, registered as GT 4955-24, at his home. He then placed his car key, laptop, and cash on a table in his room before retiring for the night.

By 5:00 AM the following morning, he discovered the items missing and promptly reported the theft to the Danchira Police. He also shared images of the stolen car on social media, appealing to the public for assistance.

Pursuit and Arrest

On February 1, 2025, a friend of the complainant spotted the vehicle near Amasaman Three Junction and alerted him. Upon arriving at the location, the complainant saw Awuku driving the stolen car. However, Awuku attempted to flee, speeding off when he noticed him.

A high-speed chase ensued, culminating in Awuku crashing the vehicle into a container at Ademan, causing severe damage. He then abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot but was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the Danchira Police.

Following investigations, Awuku was charged and brought before the court. In his plea for leniency, he expressed regret for his actions and asked for forgiveness.

Judgment

While sentencing, the court considered both Awuku’s plea for mitigation and the extensive damage caused to the vehicle. Additionally, it ordered that the stolen car and laptop be returned to the complainant.

Awuku will remain in custody to face trial for the outstanding charges of unlawful entry and theft on March 13, 2025.
