A major anti-smuggling operation along Ghana’s coast has led to the seizure of 37 sacks of substances believed to be cannabis, with the Narcotics Control Commission now taking over the case for further investigation.
The suspected drugs were intercepted during a maritime operation carried out by the Ghana Navy on Friday, 27 March, at Goi near Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
According to NACOC, initial checks suggest each of the 37 sacks contains about 70 parcels of the suspected substance, indicating a sizeable consignment that investigators believe may have been intended for onward distribution.
The operation also yielded several items thought to have been used in the transport of the cargo. These included an outboard motor, two gallons of premix fuel and five empty containers.
Authorities said the canoe involved in the operation, together with all other exhibits recovered, has now been handed over to the Commission.
NACOC says investigations are already underway to trace those behind the attempted shipment and to determine the full scope of the operation.
The seizure forms part of a broader crackdown on narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s coastal routes, where security agencies have been increasing surveillance and enforcement activity.
